Gummy Smile – Lip Repositioning

There are several factors that contribute to a gummy smile. These include, excessive gum tissue which gives the appearance of short teeth, hyper retraction of the upper lip when smiling, as well as an excessive vertical overgrowth of the upper jaw. The presence of any of these situations in isolation or in combination can result in an excessive display of gum tissue. New periodontal surgical techniques have shifted our focus towards the lip position in relation to the dentofacial complex when smiling. This new “Lip Repositioning Surgery” is an innovative intraoral technique which corrects the excessive retraction of the upper lip producing a more harmonious and aesthetically pleasing appearance when smiling. In some instances, this technique may need to be combined with simultaneous crown lengthening surgery in order to achieve the desired result.
